Prunedale's Holiday Season Happens on One Stretch of Moro Road

Prunedale Grange #388's calendar for November and December looks like a small town's whole civic schedule. It lists a holiday craft market, a craft swap, a Christmas tree exchange in the parking lot, a Santa afternoon, a 4-H luncheon, food bank mornings, tai chi, Sit & Sew, and a car club holiday setup night, all at one address, 17890 Moro Road. The Prunedale Branch Library is on the same road at 17822 Moro Road and fills in most of the weekday gaps.

Prunedale is unincorporated North Monterey County, so it has no city hall, no Main Street and no plaza where a tree lighting would usually go. This season shows what takes their place. Two buildings on the same road host nearly every public event, and one of them belongs to a Grange founded in 1927.

Two addresses, one season

Here is the public calendar for both buildings through mid-December, as it's currently posted on the Prunedale Grange events list and the Monterey County calendar.

Sat., Nov. 7 Grange, Large Hall Holiday Arts/Craft Market, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Grange posts one calendar for its whole property. It covers the Large Hall, the Youth Center and the parking lot, and it includes setup days and private group bookings alongside public events. The event pages for the craft market and Santa's Christmas give the date, time and room but nothing about vendors, admission or what happens inside. If you're planning around either one, check with the Grange first.

Why the hall carries this much weight

The holiday market is the friendly face of a building that does a lot of civic work the rest of the year. In January 2025, after the battery storage fire broke out at Moss Landing, Monterey County NOW reported that the Moss Landing Community Response Group held its first meeting at Prunedale Grange Hall on Jan. 20, four days after the fire started. KSBW reported that the meeting filled the hall, with residents asking about health, drinking water and effects on agriculture. By the Grange's own count, it hosted ten community meetings and news briefings about the fire during 2025. That October, a University of California, Santa Cruz study collected hair samples at the Grange office on Oct. 4 and 5 to test for heavy metal exposure, at no cost to participants.

Since 2015 the property has also served as a disaster shelter for county law and fire agencies. In emergencies its parking lot works as a staging area and a landing site for helicopter ambulances. Parents and schools use the same lot as a safe place to load and unload students. The Food Bank for Monterey County holds a distribution there from 9 to 10 a.m. on the first Monday of every month.

This is why the holiday calendar ends up here. In an unincorporated area, the hall that filled for an emergency briefing is also the room with tables for a craft fair.

Market weekend, Nov. 7 and 8

Market weekend is the first big date of the season. The calendar blocks out 1 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, for craft setup. The Holiday Arts/Craft Market then runs in the Large Hall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday the hall hosts a Craft Exchange.

For breakfast before the market, Gourmet Central Bake House at 17637 Vierra Canyon Road serves pastries, breakfast and coffee. According to its website, it opens at 7 a.m. Saturday and stays open until 3:30 p.m.

The same Sunday, Nov. 8, the North County Recreation and Park District holds its TIANGUIS community rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North County Rec Center, 11261 Crane St., in Castroville. If you're doing a weekend of secondhand and handmade shopping, you can hit the Grange on Saturday and Castroville on Sunday and skip the trip over the hill to the Peninsula.

From the tree exchange to Santa

After market weekend, the Grange shifts toward the holidays in steps. The Grampa Car Club meets outdoors in the parking lot on the fourth Wednesday of each month from 5 to 9 p.m., except in December. This year its November slot, Nov. 25, is listed as a holiday setup that runs 1 to 9 p.m. Three days earlier, on Sunday, Nov. 22, the Christmas Tree Exchange takes over the parking lot.

December setup starts Friday, Dec. 4. Santa's Christmas follows on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Large Hall. The next weekend belongs to younger residents and older ones. The Youth Center, where North County Future Farmers of America, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts meet, holds a STEAM Academy Open House on Dec. 12. The NC Seniors 4-H Luncheon is on Dec. 13.

The library keeps weekday mornings busy between these dates. Fusebead Art is on Dec. 2 at 10 a.m., and a Food Bank for Monterey County event is set for noon on Dec. 15. The library's Dec. 15 date falls about a week after the Grange's first-Monday distribution on Dec. 7, so food assistance on Moro Road comes twice in December, at two different buildings.

When Moro Road goes quiet

The closures matter as much as the events, since the library has nothing scheduled on those days. Monterey County Free Libraries branches close Wednesday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day, Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26 and 27, for Thanksgiving, and Dec. 24 through Jan. 1 for winter recess. Online services stay available the whole time. The Grange calendar marks Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas without any other events on those days.

On those quiet days, the county parks are the closest alternative. Neither Manzanita County Park nor Royal Oaks County Park has a holiday event on the county's 2026 calendar, and the only December entry is a parks closure on Dec. 25. Manzanita, at 17100 Castroville Blvd., has about seven miles of public trails open from sunrise to sunset. Access to its sports facilities can be limited during North County Youth Recreation Association events. Royal Oaks is a 122-acre day-use park with trails, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in November and December. On a short winter day, its 5 p.m. closing time is the main thing to plan around.

Getting to Moro Road this winter

Road work runs through the whole holiday season. Caltrans began intermittent daytime and overnight lane closures on US 101 between Prunedale and San Lucas on July 26 for a $14 million drainage culvert project. The Caltrans announcement says the work should continue through late winter, with delays of up to 10 minutes, and the project is scheduled to finish in February 2027. If you're driving to Santa's Christmas or the tree exchange from the south, give yourself those extra minutes.

The bigger change is still in the future. At the Highway 156 and Castroville Boulevard interchange, utility relocation is underway, and construction is scheduled from spring 2027 through fall 2029. According to the Caltrans project page, the project will replace the current signal with a grade-separated design and roundabouts, add about 1.3 miles of ADA-compliant multi-use path, and build a frontage road serving Monte de Lago. That makes this the last holiday season before major construction begins on one of the main routes into Prunedale from the west.

The holidays are often when families sit down together and talk about a home that has been in the family for decades, sometimes one just up the road from the Grange. If that conversation is coming up for you this season, Homes by Henson can walk you through it at your own pace, with patience and clear next steps, whenever you're ready.
